JEWISH ROME-TRASTEVERE TOUR
The city of Rome has Europe's oldest Jewish community. Rome tours of the Jewish quarter are guided by an expert in Hebrew history, culture and cuisine will walk you through Rome's unique Jewish ghetto to the century-old synagogue and to the Portico d'Ottavia, the ancient entrance to the quarter. Take some time to examine the produce and flowers from traditional small farms at the open market at Campo de Fiori. It was at Campo de Fiori that the text of the Talmud was burned, and the monk Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for speculating that there could be life on other planets. These Rome tours then pass Piazza Farnese, designed by Michelangelo, and cross the Tiber river at "Tiberina" island. On the island some medieval buildings house the first hospice and hospital in Rome run by the friars of the Good Brothers of St. John. The oldest stone bridge in western civilization can still be crossed there by foot. Our Rome tours then explore some of the small streets, alleys and squares in the Trastevere quarter, an ancient refuge of Romans who revolted against papal rule for centuries.
